daydreaming and quantum jumps
week of march 18, 2026
what's the difference between daydreaming and a quantum jump?
one is neuroscience. the other is a physics term wearing a self-help costume. splinter played a qutum jump video to me, and i start trying like i could control my dream when i was 6 yr old
daydreaming is the default mode network activating during low-demand tasks. brain simulates futures, replays pasts, drifts. not noise. hofstadter would call it the strange loop running in background. the self watching itself.
most people treat it as a problem.
quantum jumps (pop version): sudden total leap in identity. skip the steps.
physics is real. electron jumps between energy states, no intermediate states. but the metaphor breaks at human scale.
the desire behind it is real though. permission to believe radical change doesn't require grinding through every step.
what actually happens: phase transition with hidden accumulation underneath. water doesn't suddenly become steam. the heat was building the whole time.
you can engineer conditions for a phase transition.
psilocybin research at Johns Hopkins, durable personality restructuring from a single session. default mode network disrupted, ego loosens, new patterns install.
environment design: move cities, change your social graph, leave a job. remove the context that maintains your current self.
hofstadter's frame: if your self-model changes radically, you change radically. not a mystical leap. a sudden re-anchoring of the story you tell about yourself.
union vs ai
seeing lots of people lost their jobs in my coompany, people overworked too, people anxious
underneath it: if ai handles repetitive cognitive load, what happens to identity? work has been the primary anchor for self. job title, routine, institutional belonging.
when that degrades faster than people can replace it, identity crisis dressed as employment crisis.
union model was built for industrial labor. it struggles with gradual, diffuse displacement. creative guilds fighting for likeness and authorship rights are more interesting, not just wages, but the conditions of being a person who makes things.
sent splinter a meme. one of those "guy works 12 jobs in a day" videos. the joke writes itself when someone you know is a hairstylist, tattoo artist, furniture designer, artist, and photographer all at once.
she didn't need the caption. she was the caption.
but that's also the answer to the forward question. she's not fragmented. the through-line isn't a job title. it's just her.
the portfolio self
marx in 1845: hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, criticize after dinner. no fixed identity locked to one role.
deleuze and guattari: you're not a noun. you're a verb. fixed identity is imposed from outside.
the practical version is already here. not career switching in sequence but living multiple things at once. strategy by day, hardware synth at night. both real. both the self.
hofstadter's tension: can identity survive without a single stable anchor? his answer: the loop itself is the anchor.
maybe the point isn't to achieve a quantum jump. maybe it's to build internal architecture flexible enough that when the phase transition comes, you don't shatter. you just become the next thing.
maybe life is DJ. hahahahahahaha
this is a running notebook. field notes from someone watching themselves from the outside. updated weekly.
